Kinetic Vapor
Creative Direction & Design Public Art, Jackson Convention Center
A site-specific installation for the Jackson Convention Complex, translating the light and atmosphere of the local landscape into a dynamic interplay of aluminum, daylight, and LED light.
The Challenge
The Jackson Convention Complex issued a national call for artists to create a site-specific work that would activate a 100-foot architectural span and establish a distinctive sense of place, resonating with a diverse local community. The challenge was to create a culturally relevant work that complemented the new building’s contemporary architecture while meeting technical and budget requirements.
Creative Direction & Design
I drew on the surrounding landscape’s light and atmosphere as a shared point of connection, translating those qualities into a contemporary installation integrated with the building’s architecture. The familiar sensation of stepping into warm, humid air became a starting point for making an abstract work approachable—bringing a sense of the outdoor atmosphere into the building.
I developed the concept and visual direction around distinct daytime and evening identities. Custom aluminum panels caught reflected daylight, their angled surfaces creating shifting patterns of light and shadow. After dark, programmable LEDs transformed the work into a luminous evening signature.
Community Engagement
I helped position the installation as a distinctive expression of place, communicating its concept and significance to the project’s board, community stakeholders, and the public. Through the press release, opening invitations, interpretive signage, and a video for the venue’s outdoor LED display, I connected the ideas behind the work with the audiences encountering it.
